The Fifties: when rationing ended, Queen Elizabeth the Second took the throne, skirts were long and full, belts were wide, the bikini was banned from the Miss World contest and the Suez Crisis saw petrol rationed in the UK, for the first time since the war. Musically, things were changing. Elvis Presley led the way, along with people like Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. The advent of television played a big part in helping to promote the new rock and roll era, a catchphrase invented by a disc jockey from Ohio called Alan Freed. In the UK, groups like Lonnie Donegan and Cliff Richard and the Shadows dominated the music charts. Meanwhile, a little known UK band called The Quarrymen, led by two chaps named John Lennon and Paul McCartney, started playing in local venues on Merseyside. Other prominent names starting out in the fifties included Adam Faith and Tommy Steele, all of whom would go on to create a major impact on the British Music Scene. If you are a Fifties 'baby boomer' and you love music, this is the quiz for you.
