Born in New York in 1942, to working class Italian American parents, Martin Scorsese grew up to become one of the greatest American filmmakers of the post-war period. Scorsese's religious faith was strong enough for him to seriously consider a vocation in the priesthood. But the allure of the cinema, both the Hollywood pictures of American directors such as John Ford, Raoul Walsh, and Vincente Minnelli, and the Neo realist pictures from Italy and the New Wave films from France, propelled Scorsese toward studying and making his career in film. However, his deep Catholicism, coupled with his knowledge and understand of the 'Mean Streets' of New York, always informs his motion pictures, whatever the subject.
