Berkshire is one of the oldest counties in England, with the county first being mention by name in 860. The county town of Berkshire is Reading, though it used to be Abingdon until 1867. Reading is one of the largest towns in England, and is a big student centre, as Reading contains two universities. The county of Berkshire has been the sight of many great battles in English history, including Alfred's conflict with the Danes (the Battle of Englefield, Ashdown and Reading) and during the English Civil war there were two pitch battles fought in Newbury. The current population of Berkshire is 803,657.
