Together they created no less than fourteen successful comedies, including The Pirates of Penzance, The Sorcerer, and H.M.S Pinafore. Gilbert wrote the words and Sullivan composed the music. Their music was showcased at the D'Oyle Carte Theatre. Did you know that the pair fell out with its owner Richard D'Oyle Carte over the cost of a carpet? They were eventually reunited and went on to write The Grand Duke in 1896, which turned out to be a flop. Sullivan died shortly after.
